ENON VALLEY, Pa. --
Enon Valley Fire Chief Ben Hostetler said a tractor-trailer accident left the town without power for hours on Monday.
Hostetler said the truck knocked down a utility pole and transformer, knocking out power to some 1,000 to 2,000 customers in Enon Valley, Little Beaver Township, North Beaver Township and Darlington Township.
The accident happened on route 551, in front of the Penn Power sub station around 1:15 p.m. on Monday.
"Apparently the back wheels of the trailer caught the wire and tore down the top of the electric pole, which had transformers on it and was one of the main lines going through town," said Enon Valley Fire Chief Ben Hostetler.
Channel 4 Action News' Sheldon Ingram reported that the driver of the tractor-trailer was attempting to make a u-turn in a parking lot.
Hostetler said firefighters visited homes to check on residents while crews made repairs.
"This kind of weather, heat's a big concern to elderly people who are on oxygen and stuff like that," said Hostetler.
Ingram reported that Emergency personnel in Enon Valley were working to open shelters to the elderly residents who live in the small town of roughly 400 people.
The Red Cross said temporary shelters and warming centers were opened at the Darlington Township Building in Darlington at 3590 Darlington Road. The SNPJ Alpine Room was also open in SNJP Borough.
Penn Power said power was restored to all residents by 5:40 p.m. on Monday.
Officials said the accident was not weather-related.
