The firefighters, along with eight other injured firefighters, were transported to Staten Island University Hospital in Ocean Breeze. All of the injuries were considered to be minor.
The fire weakened the floor of the old two-story structure after it charred the wooden beams supporting it. The firefighters were searching for small pockets of fire when a portion of the floor collapsed, sending them to the first floor.
Other firefighters were on the first floor at the time of the collapse, but none were below the collapsed section, according to the report.
A resident of a second-floor apartment was thought to be inside, but it was later discovered that he had escaped.
The two-alarm fire occurred at Bella Home Improvements at 4028 Hylan Boulevard around 12:47 a.m.
It took 25 units and 106 firefighters to bring the fire under control by approximately 2:13 a.m.
The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
