HOUSTON --

A three-alarm fire destroyed part of a southwest Houston shopping center early Wednesday.

The fire broke out on Fondren Road near Harwin Drive at about 5 a.m.

Bright orange flames consumed part of the building and thick, black smoke filled the air.

A portion of the front of the building collapsed.

Fire department officials said the blaze began at a trading company that distributes supplies to hotels and dollar stores.

A nearby hair and nail salon and a taqueria sustained some damage.

Officials said one firefighter suffered a cut on his hand. He was treated at the scene.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Traffic in the area was blocked off to allow crews to battle the blaze.
