A 14-year-old boy saved a disabled, elderly woman from a house fire Sunday after he noticed smoke while riding by on his skateboard.

"Inside the involved structure was an elderly female watching a movie on the second floor, unaware that her house was on fire," reported Clackamas Fire District #1 PIO Steve McAdoo in a press release.

The boy stopped at the two-story home in the Oak Grove community, called 911, rang the doorbell, entered the home, assisted the single occupant outside, took her to a neighbor's home across the street, and cared for two cats that escaped the home on their own.

Firefighters arrived within four minutes and contained the fire to a single upstairs bedroom and hall, McAdoo reported. Due to smoke damage throughout the home, however, investigators estimated losses to the 1970 structure at $100,000. There was no working smoke alarm found at the home.

The cause of the blaze was under investigation, and there were no injuries to civilians or the 18 firefighters who responded to the single-alarm blaze.
