Civilian Killed by South Carolina Hazmat Truck

A Columbia fire truck struck two men, killing one, on Wednesday, according to WIS-TV.

The hazmat truck was responding with lights and siren activated to an emergency call at approximately 11:30 p.m. when the two men ran into the road after a store clerk called police on them, Richland County Coroner Gary Watts told the news station.

Michael A. Mayo, 49 -- who was wearing dark clothing -- died from his injuries in the incident on Forest Drive near Providence Hospital.

The other man, whose name was not released, reportedly suffered a leg injury.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating the incident and fire department is also conducting its own investigation.
