PITTSBURGH --

A firefighter was injured battling flames on Pittsburgh's South Side Sunday night.

Channel 4 Action News' Marcie Cipriani reported that the fire broke out at a row house in the 100 block of South 24th Street.

Deputy Fire Chief Harry Scherer said that a firefighter was cutting a second air vent in the roof when he lost his footing and partially fell through the vent.

The firefighter complained of back and rib pain, but was able to walk around and talk before being transported to a Pittsburgh hospital.

The resident of the home, as well as several animals that were inside the home, escaped the fire.

"He brought over to my house two dogs and maybe six, seven cats. I didn't know he had that many, but apparently he did have a lot," neighbor Linda Fuss said.

Animal control officers were called because several dead animals were discovered inside the house.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
