An Indianapolis firefighter who was lost inside a smoke-filled building called a Mayday and was quickly found this morning, according to WISH-TV.
Approximately 10 minutes after crews arrived on the scene, the firefighter -- who began separated from his team while performing a search and rescue operation -- called for help.
The firefighter was found about one minute later and was not injured, department spokeswoman Rita Burris told the news station.
The fire occurred shortly after 12:30 a.m. at the Green Tree Apartments on Madison Road with crews responding after residents reported seeing heavy flames and smoke from a utility closet on the building's first floor.
The fire quickly spread to the structure's roof and a second alarm was sounded, bringing at least 80 firefighters to the scene.
Privately owned fire hydrants at the complex hampered efforts to begin an aerial attack on roof, Burris said.
Investigators have set damage estimates to the 12 unit complex at $550,000 and are focusing on that utility closet as a potential ignition point.
At least 30 families were displaced and many of the families are being cared for by the American Red Cross.
