HARTFORD, Conn. --
Officials in Hartford say an ambulance caught fire near Wyllys Street and Charter Oak Place on Thursday morning.
Witnesses said it appeared to have been so badly burned that the ambulance seemed to have melted. Witnesses at the scene also reported hearing an explosion.
Aetna Ambulance Operations Supervisor, Capt. Matt Martinelli, said, "Our ambulance was en route to Hartford Hospital (when) they radioed in that their ambulance was on fire. Upon leaving our office around the corner, we saw a large plume of smoke. All of the 911 units were notified and fire units put the fire out. At this time it appears the ambulance is a total loss."
According to officials, one person was in the ambulance when the fire broke out around 11:19 a.m., but the person was removed safely and no other injuries were reported.
"When I first arrived there was some sort of explosion," Martinelli said. "We cannot verify at this time whether it was oxygen or not. The DEP is on its way here. They will look into it further for us for everybody's safety."
