Maryland Firefighter Hurt in Fall
BALTIMORE COUNTY, Md. --
Dozens of families were displaced after an apartment complex went up in flames early Saturday morning in Baltimore County.
The fire broke out at about 6 a.m. in the 2800 block of Diamond Ridge Road. It took firefighters more than an hour to bring the blaze under control. Fire officials said all 16 units in the complex were severely damaged, leaving about 40 people without a place to live.
One firefighter was injured after falling from a ladder and was taken to University of Maryland Shock Trauma with non-life-threatening injuries, according to fire officials.
Residents said that by the time fire crews arrived, flames could be seen shooting out of the fourth floor.
Brenda Curry Recalls Terrifying Scene
"While I was asleep I heard someone yell 'fire,' so I jumped up, woke my son and my niece and got out of the building," said a woman named Kokea, who lived in the complex.
Brenda Curry, another resident, recalled a terrifying scene. "The apartment was just full of smoke. I made it to the hall. I couldn't see anything and when I got to the living room the utility door on the balcony was blazing. The flames were shooting out of the utility door and I just ran out."
Firefighters from the city were brought in to help the county units. The Red Cross is assisting the displaced residents.
Fire Destroyed All 16 Units
A cause as not been determined.
