The Clackamas Fire District set a department record for installing smoke alarms on Oct. 26 with the help of a federal grant.

Twelve teams comprised of two to three employees took to the streets from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. installing 310 smoke alarms in homes occupied by residents 65 and older.

According to the department, that age group is twice as likely to to die or be injured in a fire.

The DHS awarded the district a grant worth nearly $25,000 towards the purchase of approximately 1,700 smoke alarms and the equipment to install them. This was one of many efforts being taken by the fire district to distribute and install all of the devices.

This was the single largest, one day smoke alarm installation effort ever by the fire district.

Residents called the fire district to notify them that they were in need of a smoke alarm and they were soon notified when a team would be by to install one.

Personnel participating in the event included the fire chief, fire marshal, administrative staff, fire prevention staff, fire district volunteers, information technology staff and others.
