Fire crews were responding to a three-alarm mill fire in Fall River Tuesday afternoon near Middle and Bay streets.

The mayor's office said the blaze broke out at the former Duro Textiles Co., at 206 Globe Mills Ave.

The company printed cotton fabric and also provided carpet or rug manufacturing services. A company spokesman said the building is vacant.

There was no immediate word on how the fire started or whether anyone was in danger, but the neighborhood surrounding the factory was being evacuated as a precaution, including a nearby middle school.

Firefighters were getting help from Swansea, Mass., and Tiverton, R.I. fire departments.
