CONCORD, Calif. -- A two-alarm fire at an apartment complex Tuesday night damaged eight units and displaced at least 19 people, a fire department spokesman said.

The fire, in the 1400 block of Monument Boulevard, was reported at 7:37 p.m., a Contra Costa Fire District dispatcher said.

Several apartments burned, including two that were vacant. Four units on the bottom floor suffered heavy fire damage, while four upstairs units were damaged by smoke and water, according to a fire battalion chief.

The blaze was contained about 8:20 p.m., but firefighters remained on the scene late into the night to protect against flare-ups.

No injuries were reported. The blaze displaced 17 adults and two children, the fire spokesman said. The victims are receiving temporary shelter.

Investigators have not yet determined how the fire started, although it likely began in a bottom floor unit, the battalion chief said. There was no estimate late Tuesday on the cost of the damage.
