N.Y. Firefighter Injured in Fuel Explosion
A Union Springs firefighter was badly burned yesterday when fuel exploded aboard an amphibious rescue unit, according to The Post-Standard.
Assistant Chief Steven Kalet is listed in serious condition after a fuel leak caused an explosion while he was driving the department's DUKW vehicle out of the station at approximately 4 p.m.
He was preparing to perform maintenance on the vehicle, which is used by the department to perform water rescues, as the department prepares for the warmer weather when boaters and swimmers crowd the finger lakes.
Kalet was transported by helicopter to Upstate University Hospital, according to the report.
The 35-year-old has been with the department for about 15 years and has been an assistant chief for two.
Fire Chief Garret Waldron said neither DUKW nor the station was badly damaged in the incident.
