Salina firefighters rescued an elderly woman from the second-story window of a burning home and a man jumped from the roof on Sept. 14, according to The Salina Journal.

Crews responded to the fire at 621 State Street at approximately 11:30 p.m.

Resident John Berg ran upstairs to try to find 60-year-old Victoria Pratt but became confused and disoriented in the smoke. He then ran outside and was able to climb onto the roof and rip a window air-conditioning unit out of a bedroom window.

When he reached for Pratt, he couldn't get her out of the window. Spectators brought a ladder from a neighbor's house to try to get them down but were unsuccessful.

The woman remained in her room until firefighters were able to get her out of the window and off the roof while John Berg jumped off the roof to safety.

Pratt suffered from smoke inhalation and was transported Salina Regional Health Center where she listed in fair condition yesterday afternoon.

Firefighters were told nine people were in the house, and all were accounted for, according to the report.

Fire Marshal Roger Williams said the fire most likely started around the back deck, but isn't sure how it started.

The investigation was initially hindered by rain and lightning.

Firefighters never went into the house to fight the fire due to a flashover that occurred as they attempted to gain entry.

Williams said the fire proved difficult to battle because of how the house was built and said that not much of it is salvageable.
