INDIANAPOLIS
--
A Franklin Township firefighter was killed Sunday evening in a crash on the city's south side involving another car, a utility pole and a strip club.
Indianapolis fire Capt. Rita Reith said David Joseph Newsom, 34, crashed his pickup truck in the 2700 block of Madison Avenue at about 6:30 p.m.
"Newsom was seen by a state trooper at Madison and Terrace traveling at a high rate of speed," Reith said. "The state trooper clocked him at about 81 mph."
Witnesses told police that Newsom lost control of his truck and collided with a car driven by a woman who had her two children as passengers. They were not injured.
Newsom's truck then hit a utility pole and crashed into Club Zeus, where a band was playing.
Members of the band suffered minor injuries, mostly lacerations, Reith said.
"Newsom was ejected from his vehicle (and) was transported to Wishard Hospital, where he was pronounced dead," Reith said.
Police are not sure why Newsom was speeding. He was also a logistics manager for Indiana Task Force One and left behind a wife and a 2-month-old child.
