NASHVILLE, Tenn. --
A firefighter battling a blaze in north Nashville was injured on the job Monday morning.
Crews were called to the fire at a home on 12th Avenue North after neighbors spotted the flames just after 2:30 a.m.
“The first units to arrive on the scene reported heavy smoke and fire, matter of fact, the flames were even coming through the roof,” said Nashville Fire Department Chief Ricky Taylor.
During the initial attack on the blaze, one crew member was injured when he fell through the fire-damaged floor.
“He was inside the house and it had been burning for quite awhile,” said Taylor. “The floor had burned out where he was working. He got to a particular spot and he went down and injured his leg.”
He was taken to the hospital but is expected to recover.
Officials said the woman who lives in the home was not there when the fire started.
Officials aren’t sure what caused the blaze.
“We have quite a bit of damage here,” Taylor said, “so it’s going to take a while to reconstruct the scene and get a good look at it.”
According to Taylor, preliminary investigations give no reason to consider the fire suspicious.
