A Fitchburg firefighter was injured yesterday afternoon when he fell while battling a blaze at a nightclub, according to The Worcester Telegram & Gazette.
The unidentified firefighter fell 15 to 20 feet while on a catwalk at Club Swagger at 281 Lunenburg St. at approximately 3:50 p.m.
"I called for more line, and he turned to see if he could stretch the line, and stepped maybe three inches to the side, and fell through a drop ceiling onto a concrete floor," Deputy Fire Chief Robert Haley told the newspaper.
He was transported to UMass Memorial Medical Center -- University Campus in Worcester and was reported to be conscious and alert.
The fire was extinguished in about 20 minutes and Haley said the fire appears to have started when a closed-up vent overheated and caught fire.
The damage is estimated at about $30,000.
