WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. --

The West Sacramento City Council has tabled a plan to cut several firefighter positions.

Leaders will instead talk with city department leaders to find other ways to close a budget gap.

A big crowd turned out at Wednesday's City Council meeting to speak against cuts.

The city is facing a budget shortfall of more than $4.5 million.

One proposal would have cut dozens of firefighter jobs and eliminated one fire engine.

Firefighter Wallace Enos said the city needs to rearrange its priorities.

"We believe that they need to refocus their efforts on just the basics right now, just like we do in our own households when money gets tight at the end of the month," he said.

The proposal to slash firefighter jobs would have saved the city more than $1 million.
