MIDDLETOWN, Ohio --
Police in Middletown have identified a man who was killed when he fell into a sewer line early Friday morning in the 2500 block of Yankee Road.
According to police, the city worker, 32-year-old Jabin Lakes, along with two other city workers, opened a manhole cover to a sewer line and may have been overcome by fumes and fell in. They said he become unconscious.
Firefighters were called to pull Lakes out of the sewer line, but they also became overcome by the fumes. One of the firefighters, Capt. Todd Wissemier, was unconscious and taken by Careflight to Miami Valley Hospital.
Police said the Fire Marshal Bob Hess was conscious and was taken to Atrium Medical Center in Middletown for treatment.
Police said they are still working to remove Lakes' body from the sewer line. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities said Lakes worked for the Department of Public Works for 17 years. They said Wissemier was a 20-year veteran of the fire department and Hess was a 19-year veteran of the fire department.
