An Atlantic City firefighter is in intensive care after suffering significant smoke inhalation following a blaze on Saturday night, according to The Press of Atlantic City.

Firefighter Robert D. Gragg was transported to the ICU of AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center at about 2 a.m. Sunday morning after responding to the late-night blaze and remained through the night.

Gragg joined the department in March of 2008 and is a member of Battalion 1 at Station 1 on Maryland and Atlantic avenues.

"He may have some damage to his lungs, but we don't know the extent just yet," Fire Chief Dennis Brooks told the newspaper.

Crews responded to the fire at a multi-family home on 1401 Memorial Avenue at approximately 11:45 p.m.

There were several rescues including one in which a woman tossed her two young children out a second-floor window to someone standing on the street below, according to the report.

Investigators determined that the blaze was the result of an overheated hot plate.
