Burned Calif. Firefighter Returns to Duty

MODESTO, Calif. --  A Modesto firefighter injured battling a New Year's Day blaze is returning to full duty Tuesday. Jason Clevenger is expected to report for duty at 7 a.m., the fire department said. He and Fire Engineer James Adams were hurt when the roof of a burning home collapsed beneath them. Adams and Clevenger were dragged to safety within minutes but both sustained serious burns. It was the worst injury incident sustained by the Modesto Fire Department in a decade.

A Modesto firefighter injured battling a New Year's Day blaze is returning to full duty Tuesday.

Jason Clevenger is expected to report for duty at 7 a.m., the fire department said.

He and Fire Engineer James Adams were hurt when the roof of a burning home collapsed beneath them. Adams and Clevenger were dragged to safety within minutes but both sustained serious burns.

It was the worst injury incident sustained by the Modesto Fire Department in a decade.

Clevenger, who suffered second- and third-degree burns to more than 10 percent of his body, spent 17 days hospitalized, including 12 days at UC Davis Medical Center's burn unit. He's been on light-duty work for the past few weeks.

Adams is still going through physical therapy and rehabilitation, which could take up to a year.
