BAKERSFIELD, Calif. --

A family of ducks is safe thanks to the help of local firefighters and Bakersfield Police Department officers.

Around 12 p.m. on Friday, the Bakersfield Fire Department received a call that there were ducklings in the water of the Mill Creek Park canal that were unable to get out.

When crews arrived, they said they noticed that there were seven ducklings in the water with their mother and they were unable to exit the canal.

For fear that the ducks may be swept under the roadway and through the canal, the BFD set up a team to rescue the ducklings.

Pat Caprioli with the BFD said that the fire crews had to do the same thing last year during spring with the young ducklings that hadn't learned to fly.

The thing that all firefighters know is the motto of risk versus gain, Caprioli said.

Caprioli said there weren't any firefighters or police officers that actually entered the water.

Fire crews and police officers were able to corner the mother in the canal and rescued her first, which then in turn made the rest of the ducklings follow.

The whole rescue took about 25 minutes to complete.

All the ducks were uninjured and were safely transported back to a safer area of the park's water reserve.
