A Kentland firefighter saved the life of a 1-year-old girl yesterday while returning from a returned from battling a brush fire, according to a press release from Prince George's County Fire/EMS.
At approximately 7:30 p.m., an engine from station 833 was returning to after working for three hours at a brush fire in Bowie when they were dispatched to a 911 report that a child was choking and had stopped breathing at a home on nearby Greely Place in Landover.
The family knew the station was nearby and headed there with the child.
As the engine was turning around to respond, the family's vehicle approached and blocked them in.
A family member got out of the car holding a non-breathing girl and handed her to Firefighter/EMT Fred Caramiello explained that the child had been choking.
Caramiello assessed the infant and performed several back-slaps and was successful in dislodging the obstruction, allowing the girl to breathe on her own.
The infant was transported to a nearby hospital and remains hospitalized but is in good condition and is expected to make a full recovery.
