BREVARD COUNTY, Fla.
--
Investigators are looking for vandals Monday who trashed the Brevard County Fire Rescue's maintenance yard. They ransacked the place, stole a utility truck and then set it on fire. It happened at the center on Wenner Way in Cocoa.
The vandals did a lot of damage. Crime scene investigators Monday were fingerprinting the county construction services truck. Meanwhile, more agents were inside the facility looking for other clues.
Around 7:00am, someone in Cocoa called 911 to report a fire in the woods off of Orange Road and, when firefighters got there, they found one of their utility trucks on fire. About that same time, workers were reporting to the maintenance facility off of Wenner Way and found all sorts of vandalism.
"They scattered the equipment and, it appears, they tried to get some of the four-wheelers off of the trucks," said Assistant Chief Brad Hall of Brevard County Fire Rescue. "It's pretty extensive and looks like they went through a lot of equipment."
Investigators believe someone hopped a fence and then tried to steal some of Brevard County Fire Rescue's four wheelers. Some of the compartments on the vehicles were opened and equipment thrown around the ground.
Investigators also believe the crooks were able to steal the utility truck and then took it on a joy ride before getting it stuck in a sandy hill in Cocoa and ditching the truck.
The State Fire Marshal was on scene investigating the fire. She said it does appear to have been set in the cab of the truck. The utility truck is, for the most part, totaled.
Investigators are interviewing potential witnesses. Anyone with information on the case is asked to call 321-633-1762.
