Six people were hospitalized after a fire at a Groton Saturday morning, fire officials said.
More than 50 firefighters were called to battle a blaze that broke out in the basement of a Groton home and spread throughout the first floor. Fire officials said flames were reported at about 4 a.m. and officials were forced to shut down Route 117 because of the fire.

More than 50 firefighters were called to battle a blaze that broke out in the basement of a Groton home and spread throughout the first floor. Fire officials said flames were reported at about 4 a.m. and officials were forced to shut down Route 117 because of the fire.
Fire officials said four people were inside the house at the time of the fire. Those four people as well as two police officers were taken to an area hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation.
They made an attempt to get into the residence when they believed victims were trapped, but didnt get too far because too much smoke, said Groton Fire Chief Todd Fetcho of the two officers.
The state fire marshal is investigating the fires cause.
