Firehouse.com Editor's Note: The daughter of the man mistakenly pronounced dead -- George Waters -- told the Washington Post that he has died.
A man originally pronounced dead by Maryland paramedics Friday is now recuperating in a hospital.
The Prince George’s County medics who declared the man dead will have no patient contact while the incident is reviewed by medical oversight officials, said Mark Brady, spokesman for Prince George’s Fire and EMS.
About noon on Friday, EMS crews were requested by Glenarden Police to assist with a possible deceased person, Brady said.
Within four minutes, the medics “concurred that the adult male was deceased,” he explained in a prepared statement.
“At about 1:30 p.m., an official from the County Police Department’s Forensic Services summoned the Fire/EMS Department to return to the scene as the adult male was displaying signs that he was alive. A different EMS unit arrived shortly thereafter and transported the patient to an area hospital,” Brady’s document read.
As soon as officials were made aware of the incident, the medical director was notified, and interviewed the personnel involved.
The two medics will be on desk duty until the issue is resolved.
Brady concluded: “Actions of personnel are taken very seriously by the Fire/EMS Department. We will ensure a complete and through review and if warranted take whatever corrective action is called for to avoid any reoccurrence.”
