PHOENIX
--
Police are trying to figure out how to secure a 15-foot-deep sinkhole near 31st Avenue and McDowell Road after a dog was found trapped inside.
A group of children found the sinkhole and the dog at about 6 p.m. Wednesday, police said.
Animal rescue crews couldn't get the dog out, so they called the Phoenix Fire Department.
Nine-year-old Ernesto Arellano watched as firefighters pulled the dog out.
"It took a long time for them to take the dog out," Ernesto said.
Police said they're worried that more pets -- and even children -- could fall into the hole.
The dog, who was wearing tags, was OK. Animal Care and Control officials are trying to reunite it with its owner.
