GREENSBORO --

A Greensboro woman credits a firefighter with coming to her assistance after she was mugged while walking home from work Tuesday evening.

Caren Weiss had just finished her shift at Elizabeth's Pizza on Friendly Avenue and was walking home to her apartment on New Garden Road when she noticed a man following her.

"He comes and runs and tries to grab my purse, and he knocks me down. (I was) laying there kicking and screaming," Weiss said, adding that the man told her he had a gun.

Across the street, Greensboro firefighter Allen Fields was taking out the trash when he heard Weiss screaming. Fields yelled at the man, who took off running with Weiss's apron and a letter she was getting ready to mail, leaving the purse behind.

"He came to my assistance and asked if I was ok, and said he couldn't go to sleep with the thought somebody had been hurt," Weiss said.

The thief never displayed gun, but Weiss said she was thankful Fields was there, especially since he put his life in danger.

"God was looking out for me last night. That's all I can say. I'm very, very grateful," she said. "I think God has a wonderful way of taking care of us and putting us in a situation that we're going to learn from, and allows other people to come in and be of assistance."

Greensboro police asked that anyone with information about the crime call Crimestoppers at 373-1000.
