DENVER --
An evening unwrapping Christmas gifts quickly turnd into an emergency for an Evergreen family when the chimney caught on fire Thursday night
The family was throwing the wrapping paper into the fireplace and some of the paper caught fire in the chimney and spread to the roof and deck, firefighters said.
"When we start fires, we generally have paper underneath wood. When you just throw in a newspaper or wrapping paper into a free-burning fire, it has a tendency to lift with the current. It carries right up the chimney and it can get easily caught in the flue or the chimney and cause a problem," said Chief Garry De Jong of Evergreen Fire Rescue.
No one was injured, and firefighters were able to quickly put out the fire. The fire left a 3-foot hole in the roof of the home.
