BELLE GLADE, Fla.
--
Three people, including an infant, were airlifted to area hospitals after an early-morning fire to a Belle Glade building.
The fire started Tuesday morning at a building that houses a wholesale retail shop on the bottom floor and at least four apartments on the second floor.
Palm Beach County Fire Rescue Capt. Rick Christmas said the smoke was so thick inside that firefighters could hardly see.
"So as I stepped inside, I heard a moan and I used my TIC -- my thermal imaging camera -- and I realized -- I looked -- and I saw a victim," Christmas said.
That thermal imaging camera helped firefighters remove the infant and two adults from the burning building.
Both adults were airlifted to one hospital. The infant was airlifted to St. Mary's Medical Center. Their injuries were considered serious but not life-threatening.
"Thankfully, I heard the kid moan, so we realized what we had," Christmas said.
The fire was contained to a small unit on the southwest side of the building. Investigators said they don't suspect foul play.
