ELON, N.C. --

An Elon fire captain assaulted a fellow firefighter in December, but the incident wasn't reported until Feb. 6, Elon Police Chief Lavell Lovette said Thursday.

Lovette said Joel Brian Hurdle, 52, was charged with simple physical assault and communicating threats.

Hurdle and the victim, William Grant Andrews Jr., 23, had been horsing around, and at some point Andrews took the keys off Hurdle's keychain, Lovette said.

After Andrews left Station 1, where the incident happened, and went to Station 2, Hurdle followed to confront Andrews, Lovette said.

Lovette said when Hurdle arrived, he found Andrews welding and pulled of his welding mask. The two then got into a verbal argument where Hurdle allegedly threatened Andrews, Lovette said.

Elon's Town Manager said both are still employed.
