BERKELEY COUNTY, W.Va. -- A firefighter from Baker Heights Volunteer Fire Company is still in critical condition at Washington Hospital Center's burn unit.

45 year old Kenneth Ayers suffered numerous broken bones to his face, fractures to his arms, and burns to his airway. Ayers is in critical but stable condition.

The fire broke out Tuesday night at a barn in Berkeley County. T his blaze is the ninth suspicious fire in the past month in the county. Investigators are still not sure if they have a serial arsonist on their hands, but say there are many similarities among the fires.

Sheriff Kenny Lemaster with the Berkeley County Sheriff's department says, "Connected in their time element, that they're happening in a very close proximity of time and general location that it's kind of isolated in a certain section of the county."

The sheriff's and fire marshal's offices say they're stepping up their investigation by calling in reinforcements, lead investigators from the state fire marshal's office as well as the ATF are coming in to help.
