SURRY COUNTY, N.C. --

A fire at chicken house off Moser Road in Surry County killed at least 20,000 3-week-old chickens.

The fire was called in at about 8:45 a.m.

Surry County Fire Marshal Doug Jones said the cause of the fire was unknown.

"I believe I saw one chicken alive, and a firefighter reach down and pick it up," Ararat Fire Chief Brian Parker told WXII's newsgathering partner the Mount Airy News.

The chickens' owner, Gaither Bledsoe, was partially insured, Jones said, and would be able to recoup some of his losses.
