HOUSTON --

A single father received an unexpected holiday gift, KPRC Local 2 reported.

Firefighter Larry Weaver went to his firehouse in Porter on Friday to find that Gallery Furniture had brought in trucks full of furniture to fill his new house.

Weaver is a single father of two who has faced some challenges while building a place for him and his 5-year-old daughter and 12-year-old son to live.

"His plan was to finish construction of the home part time, on his own, to keep the cost down," said co-worker Steven Polonski.

But Weaver's project was suddenly put on hold when he found out his son needed a heart transplant. He put his life of fighting fires on the back burner to focus on son.

Seeing Weaver's dreams of a house sit incomplete, his fellow firefighters came to the rescue.

"It's a tradition in the fire service to take care of our own," said Polonski.

Fellow firefighters joined together and put in countless hours on the house that's yet to be done.

"We saw a need, we tried to fill it. Unfortunately, the need was a little larger than our small department could handle. With all the hours we've put in, we've still got a lot of work to do," said Polonski.

Surrounding businesses started pitching in by donating flooring, electrical help and furniture. The goal is to be home for the holidays. With just two weeks left to Christmas day, the firefighters are putting in extra time.

"I've got probably 40-50 hours invested in this house," said Polonski.

The furniture donated by Gallery Furniture will remain at the fire department until the house is complete.

Donations for Brenden Weaver's hospital costs are being taken at any Amegy Bank. Anyone interested in helping with the house is asked to call the Porter Fire Department station 121 at 281-354-6666.
