Chickens Fry in Washington Blaze

Firefighters are on the scene of an overnight fire that gutted several chicken coops and killed thousands of chickens in Stanwood.

Flames shooting as high as 40 feet burned through a National Food Corporation facility on 268th Street Northwest near 28th Avenue, just west of I-5.

The fire destroyed three large coops, each about 600 feet long.

The damage is estimated at more than $2 million.
