DOUGLAS COUNTY, Colo. --

Mercedes Orsorio was babysitting her two grandchildren when she heard a huge boom Tuesday afternoon.

She said it sounded like a bomb, said Carlos Orsorio, Mercedes husband. Were from El Salvador, so we know what bombs sound like sadly.

The lightning bolt stuck the home in the 3300 block of White Oak St. in Highlands Ranch at about 4 p.m. Tuesday.

The alarms went off, and the dog was pacing up and down going crazy, one of the kids was running around very scared and then she heard the knocks on the door. She didnt know the house was on fire, he said.

Orsorio said neighbors were knocking on both the front and back doors to get everyone out.

They were like guardian angels, said a woman who appeared to be a relative of the Orsorios.

No one was hurt in the fire which was centered in the roof area above the master bedroom.

A huge hole in the ceiling and charred, wet debris was left by fire fighters who put out the blaze.

Neighbors said there was very little rain at the time of the lightning strike.

Damage costs to the home were not immediately known.

The Osorios found another place to stay until an inspector can evaluate any structural damage to the home.

"We're real appreciative no one was hurt and things can be replaced, Osorio said. That's what you have insurance for right?"
