Fire Scorches 570 Acres of California Park

HENRY COE STATE PARK, Calif. --

A fire burning east of Henry Coe State Park has scorched 570 acres, Cal Fire officials said.

The blaze is on private property at Mustang Peak, which is on the border of Santa Clara and Stanislaus counties and as of Wednesday evening was about 60 percent contained.

The fire is traveling slowly in rugged terrain 22 miles north of Highway 152.

The fire is being called the "Mustang Incident" by Cal Fire officials.

A Hollister strike team is at the scene.

Cal Fire said it is responding with engines and bulldozers as well as two helicopters and air tankers that can spray retardant on the area.

Department of Forestry and Fire Protection Battalion Chief Paul Van Gerwen said there are 230 fire personnel at the scene. Van Gerwen said no structures are threatened by the blaze.

According to its Web site, Henry W. Coe State Park contains more than 87,000 acres of land and is located in southern Santa Clara County near Morgan Hill.
