MARYSVILLE, Wash. --
A Marysville man suffered burns over 30 percent of his body following an explosion and fire Saturday in the man's garage.
Firefighters from the Marysville Fire District responded to a report of a man on fire and minutes later received a call that a large fire had broken out at the same location.
The victim, 47-year-old John Bailey, was working with some chemicals when the explosion and subsequent fire occurred, his son-in-law said.
"He pretty much inhaled flame trying to just scream for help," said Bailey's son-in-law Eugene Coutee.
Couttee and another family member worked to smother the flames on Bailey's body with a blanket.
Bailey was airlifted to Seattle's Harborview Medical Center where he remained on Monday in serious condition.
The Snohomish County Fire Marshal's office is investigating the cause of the fire and explosion.
Damages to the structure and contents are estimated at $15,000.
