CONCORD, N.C. --

Fire engines and police cars filled a Concord neighborhood Thursday night.

The Concord fire department said a 10-year-old boy fell into a muddy pit on Nannyberry Lane off of Zion Church Road East. The child was stuck in the mud up to his chest.

The fire department dug him out with shovels. They said they laid a ladder down over the area where the boy was and put a rope around him, then dug around him.

Once he was freed, the boy's mother rushed to hug him.

Firefighters said the child will be fine.
