SANDY SPRINGS, Ga. --
Fulton County officials have charged a Sandy Springs man with 14 counts of arson after they said he purposely burned an apartment building.
Fire Marshal Jeff Scarbrough announced Friday that the State Fire Marshals Office arrested Bakari Ike Muenda on May 4 for arson.
Muenda was arrested for an apartment fire that occurred on April 27 at Legacy Key Apartments in Sandy Springs.
There were 16 apartment units in the building that burned and 12 of them were leased to residents at the time of the fire. First arriving Sandy Springs firefighters encountered heavy fire conditions with flames showing through the roof. It took over 26 Sandy Springs firefighters about an hour to bring the fire under control, according to Scarbrough.
Muenda was at home only minutes before the fire began, fire investigators said. Fire investigators identified more than one point of origin during their investigation. Muenda could not be located after the fire for several days for questioning, police said.
The Fulton County District Attorneys Office charged Muenda with 14 counts of first degree arson. Muenda is currently being held in the Fulton County Jail.
