North Carolina Man Killed Trying to Save Dog

The cause is under investigation.

MOORESVILLE, N.C. --

Firefighters said a man was killed when he ran inside his burning house looking for his dog.

The fire erupted around 4:30 p.m. at a home on Wild Iris Lane in the Harbours neighborhood in Mooresville.

Neighbors said the homeowner's son was outside the house and ran inside to get the family dog. He didn't come out.

Fire crews arrived soon after and pulled the man out of the house.

Neighbors said the son, who is in his late teens or early 20's, was found only a few feet away from the front door.

He was rushed to the hospital, with life threatening injuries. The dog died.

Friends of the homeowner tell Eyewitness News, the father is a pastor at a local church, but wasn't home at the time of the fire.

Fire officials said there is extensive damage to the back of the house, and the fire likely started in a back room on the first floor.

They still have not determined a cause of the fire.
