WASHINGTON, D.C. -- When a team is in sync, amazing things can occur.
That's just what happened last April when D.C. firefighters arrived at a working house fire.
"There was fire blowing out the first floor, and extending to the second when I arrived," explained Battalion Chief John Faulkner.
En route to the call, Faulkner heard there were reports of someone trapped in the home.
Crews from Rescue Squad 3 and Engine 23 went inside the blazing structure to locate and rescue a resident. "They did it without the protection of a hoseline. Hitting the fire may have caused steam burns..."
When the brought the victim out, he was immediately turned over to medics.
"It was impressive," he said of the rescue. "The fire was not under control. They risked everything to save him. It was a total team effort. They worked well together."
Faulkner had just been transferred to the Third Battalion, and wasn't familiar with many of the firefighters. That incident impressed him.
"They had a terrific leader in there that day, Lt. Klinger," he said. "We couldn't have asked for a better outcome..."
