BAKERSFIELD, Calif. --

A family is homeless after an early morning fire destroyed their home and most of their belongings.

Neighbors said they woke up to what sounded like fireworks, but when they came outside, they saw a home's fence was on fire, and that quickly caught fire to the shake wood roof.

Firefighters said the fire quickly spread, and was fueled by wind.

It took firefighters about 45 minutes to get the fire under control, but they're estimating about $1,100,000 in losses.

Even though the homeowner said she is devastated that she lost almost everything she owns, she had a good attitude, and was finding some humor in the situation.

Debora Savoy, said, A firefighter walked out with this little cup, a little silver cup, and he said 'where's the old man?' and I said 'which old man? There's lots of them around here right now. And he said 'the one with no teeth!' and he had found his teeth."

Savoy said she is also happy because firefighters were able to save a motorized scooter and her camper-trailer wasn't damaged either.

Savoy said her neighbors helped her family all morning, bringing them food, water, and even items like pants and shoes.

There were no injuries reported and investigators are still on the scene trying to determine the cause of the fire.
