MALABAR, Fla. --
Firefighters in Brevard County have a new tool in their battle against brush fires.
FireIce is a powder that mixes with water inside a fire engine's tank. It helps keep water from evaporating before it reaches the flames, and it keeps oxygen away from the fire.
That means each truck can do more work, and better work, to keep wildfires from spreading.
"I'm not a skeptic anymore. I believe in this product. This thing has got some potential. It's going to revolutionize firefighting," Malabar Fire Chief Joe Gianantonio said.
Firefighters said the first time they used FireIce, they only used one-sixth of the water normally used to battle a brush fire.
They said it also took half of the time it would usually take to extinguish the blaze.
