NEW BEDFORD, Mass. --

An overnight fire left 37 people homeless after it destroyed a three-story brick apartment building in New Bedford.

The fire damaged all 12 of the apartments at 980 Sharon St., the New Bedford Standard Times reported.

All of the tenants escaped the building after the smoke detectors went off, New Beford fireman Scott Kruger told the Standard Times.

The Red Cross was on hand to help anyone in need of shelter, Kruger said.

The fire was reported at 11:18 p.m. and did not seem suspicious. It started above a ventilating ceiling fan in a bedroom of a second floor apartment and quickly spread up the walls to the roof, District Chief Paul Coderre Jr. said.
