Firefighters battling a blaze that gutted a west Houston home Thursday afternoon briefly became trapped by fast-moving flames coming from the attic, officials said.
The firefighters called for help shortly after 2 p.m. while they were on the second floor of the home in the 10000 block of Sugar Hill, Houston Fire Department officials said.
Other HFD crews quickly placed a ladder against the side of the house, officials said.
"The firefighters were able to escape through the window," HFD Assistant Chief Omero Longoria said.
Once the trapped firefighters were rescued, firefighters prevented the flames from spreading to other houses.
Homeowner Therese Whaley was running errands when her husband called to say their house was engulfed in flames.
"He smelled smoke and then he called me," Whaley said.
Whaley said her husband and their housekeeper were the only people inside the home at the time.
"She got the dog out," Whaley said. "We're all good."
The only reported injury was a Houston firefighter who sprained his arm at the scene. He was later taken to a hospital, officials said.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
