OMAHA, Neb. --

New York City firefighters who were the first at the scene on Sept. 11, 2001, were in Iowa Thursday helping rebuild a Boy Scout ranch leveled by a tornado.

The firefighters pick a project to work on each year somewhere in the U.S.

They said the work honors their colleagues killed in the attacks on the World Trade Center.

This year, the firefighters plan to help build a chapel and work on other projects at Little Sioux. A tornado there in 2008 killed four scouts and destroyed the camp.

The effort is part of the "New York Says Thank You Foundation," which works to memorialize those who died in New York City.
