Florida Girl Alerts Families About Fire
ORLANDO, Fla. --
The state Fire Marshal's Office is trying to determine what caused a fire to burn through the roof of an Orange County apartment complex on Sunday.
Six families lost their homes in the fire at the Lancaster Village Apartments in south Orange County. The fire started about 9 p.m. Sunday at the complex, near U.S. Highway 17-92 and Oak Ridge Road,
Officials are crediting a 10-year-old girl with saving lives. They said Monday that she spotted flames shooting from the apartment.
"The little girl came knocking, and it was to tell everyone the building was on fire," said resident Julie Rodriquez.
Jeff Holten of the Orange County Fire Department said, "It was truly amazing. They did a really good job. They got themselves out, then made sure their neighbors were out as well."
The fire started in an upstairs unit bathroom.
The girl, who was not identified, was taken to the hospital to be checked after the blaze.
