OLATHE, Kan. --

Firefighters rescued three people from a burning home late Sunday night at 163rd Street and Ridgeview Road.

Fire officials said working smoke alarms alerted three sleeping family members to a fire just before midnight. The family, two adults and one child, attempted to get out of the house but a small fire and smoke on the stairs blocked their escape.

Homeowner told KMBC's Dan Weinbaum that he put the fire out just before firefighters arrived using a bucket of water.

Firefighters found the family in an upstairs bathroom and then carried the child and led the two adults outside to safety.

A teenage family member also made it out safely.

Firefighters pulled two family dogs out of the home. They are OK.

All four family members were taken to hospitals for minor smoke inhalation.

The cause of the fire is believed to be electrical.
