A fury of heat and flames could be seen for miles Wednesday after a 56-foot yacht caught fire in the middle of Biscayne Bay.

MIAMI --

A 56-foot yacht caught fire in the middle of Biscayne Bay Wednesday, sending a plume of black smoke that could be seen for miles into the evening sky.

According to Sea Tow, a turbocharger on one of the boat's engines caught fire around 5:00 p.m., sparking the blaze.

Dan Trumbel, the boat's captain, emptied three fire extinguishers before he called for help. He then jumped into the water to escape the intense heat.

After receiving Trumbel's mayday call, Miami Fire Rescue crews, followed the plume of smoke to reach the burning vessel.

"It was very large flames and almost the whole cabin was fully engulfed," Miami Fire Dept. Lt. Jose Almeida told Local 10's Janine Stanwood.

Firefighters used foam to put out blaze and rushed Trumble to Mercy Hospital.

A firefighter at the scene told Local 10 that Trumble suffered smoke inhalation, but otherwise was not hurt.
